The Certificates II and III in Applied Language aim to provide students with the language skills and cultural knowledge to enable them to communicate in social and workplace situations in a language other than English. These are nationally accredited qualifications that can be used on resumes, when applying for jobs and as tangible evidence of a student’s hard work and achievements in their language studies in secondary school.
Students develop the skills to speak spontaneously and without scripting, and become familiar with a range of text-types for reading and writing, preparing them for use of language at higher levels of study, for travel, in the workplace and in their personal lives.
There is an emphasis on the importance of culturally-appropriate interactions, with students learning to understand cultural differences, similarities, expectations, customs, and appropriateness of behaviour and language use. This intercultural sensitivity and capacity to function in environments where there is a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds is recognised by employers and is an asset in all workplaces in Australia.
The VET Applied Language qualifications have an authentic, communicative focus. Students learn to use the language to communicate effectively in ways that can be transferred into a range of real-life settings. The tasks involved require students to be able to engage in simple interactions both in social contexts and in the workplace. The qualification supports students to build confidence and capacity in language, to develop fluency and to communicate in spontaneous ways.
The Certificates in Applied Language can be adapted to any language. Examples are listed below, but we welcome enquiries about other languages as well. The year level and duration of a program in a school is flexible depending on student language level and previous experiences, and the number of allocated classroom hours.
