About this qualification

This qualification is ideal for students interested in a career in hairdressing. Upon successful completion, students will be well prepared to apply for a hairdressing apprenticeship. This hands- on qualification allows students to develop their creative and practical skills within a salon setting, focused on developing employability skills. Students learn how to prepare clients for salon services, safe use of hairdressing tools and equipment, hair styling techniques and products.

Work Placement

Some Units of Competency in this qualification have a work placement requirement. This may be able to be completed at your school depending on the facilities and equipment. For some guidance on this, please contact us.

Victorian Schools

The VCAA mandates a minimum of 40 hours of SWL for students undertaking the Certificate II in Salon Assistant. Where the training package requires work periods / shifts, this can be used to satisfy the VCAA SWL placement requirements for the program.

Trainer/Assessor Requirements

Regulatory requirements state that, for some units, trainers must hold a Certificate III in Hairdressing, or a Certificate III in Barbering, or a Certificate IV in Hairdressing, or be able to demonstrate equivalence of competencies; and have at least three years full time employment experience as a hairdresser in a salon environment.
